NEW YORK (MarketWatch) — Exxon Mobil’s adjusted second-quarter production loss of 3% disappointed Wall Street, despite the oil giant’s record net income of nearly $12 billion, analyst William Featherston of UBS said. His 2008 target for Exxon Mobil is for adjusted production to be flat-to up 1%, he said. Exxon Mobil shares fell 3.3% to $81.58, giving back most of their gains in the previous session. Oppenheimer & Co. analyst Fadel Gheit said contracts with oil producing countries are constraining Exxon Mobil’s liquid output, plus flare-ups in Nigeria appear to be worsening. Exxon shares are down about 13% so far this year. “This has been one of the worst years ever for Exxon Mobil,” he said.

Formerly Faith Bloom, then Zeolite, and now called ShengdaTech (SDTH), the company was founded in 1993, went public in late March 2006, and has traded on the NASDAQ since mid 2007. Based in Tai’an City, China, ShengdaTech operates in two segments. It is a leading producer of nano precipitated calcium carbonate products (around 46% of sales) and also manufactures coal based chemicals (around 54% of sales) for fertilizers and other products.
Nano precipitated calcium carbonate [NPCC] is derived from limestone and has a variety of applications as an additive. NPCC improves and lowers costs on epoxy resin, oil based inks and paints, paper products, plastics, PVC building materials, and tires. Demand for NPCC is growing briskly, at double digit rates. ShengdaTech says that it has about a 10% share of its current market.

Michael Pettis submits:
Standard & Poor’s have just raised China’s long-tem sovereign credit rating to A+, based on its strengthening external position. In part this reflects China’s strong fiscal position – in June according to a release Thursday by Credit Suisse, China’s consolidated fiscal surplus for the previous twelve months reached RMB 443.5 billion, equal to about 1.5% of GDP (although needless to say I am worried about hidden expenditures that may one day show up as contingent liabilities). But the upgrade mainly means, I think, that China has accumulated so much in the way of foreign currency reserves that it will have little difficulty in repaying its very limited foreign-currency external obligations.
